📡 THIS WEEK IN CRYPTO

GM, Readers!

Last week was open combat. This week? Quiet reshuffling. A contrarian whale crossed 1,000 BTC while everyone else de-risked. Old bitcoin from 2011 and 2013 kept stirring. Metaplanet went shopping for yen. BitMine added another 9,900 ETH.

Bitcoin closed on Sunday at around $62,818, per Coinglass, down roughly 3% w/w. Spot BTC ETFs bled $389.71M, reversing last week's $853.54M inflow. The bright spot: Solana ETFs still pulled in $10.26M as of August 14, per SoSoValue.

Let’s get into it...

🐳 THE BIG WHALE MOVES

1. The Contrarian Whale Just Crossed 1,000 BTC

Anonymous wallet 19pFLW purchased another 300 BTC for $19.03M on August 14, per Lookonchain. That took its total to 1,120 BTC (about $70.4M), officially crossing the "whale" threshold while the rest of the market was selling. Identity still unknown.

This buyer has been methodical, adding into weakness while institutional ETF cash was exiting.

Whale Intel: When everyone de-risks, and one wallet keeps stacking, that is a signal worth watching.

2. Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Keep Waking Up

On August 10, Galaxy Research reported a wallet starting "14vMEC" that swept 26.96 BTC after 12.5 years of silence, a 7,975% gain. That followed a 500 BTC transfer from an 18TExP wallet inactive for almost 12 years and a 49.97 BTC move by an address, dormant since 2011.

Not all of it is Coldcard-related, but the timing after the July 30 firmware exploit is hard to ignore. Most transfers land in fresh self-custody, not exchanges.

Whale Intel: Aged coins moving does not mean selling. Track destination wallets, not the transfers.

3. Metaplanet Just Invented BitBonds

On August 13, Tokyo-listed Metaplanet unveiled a corporate bond program called BitBonds. The pilot raised ¥200M ($1.3M) across four series at 4.0 to 4.3% coupons, three-year maturities, via its Metaplanet Securities subsidiary.

Metaplanet holds 43,000 BTC, targeting 100,000. BitBonds is Japan's first bitcoin-treasury bond program and a third capital channel beyond equity and preferred stock.

Whale Intel: Dollar amount is tiny. Template is not. If the next series scales, expect Japanese copycats.

4. BitMine Keeps the 14-Month Streak Alive

BitMine disclosed on August 17 that it added 9,926 ETH last week, taking total holdings to 5,815,164 ETH (4.8% of supply). Total crypto + cash portfolio: $11.4B.

The firm has bought ETH every week for over 14 months straight. Staked balance: 5,067,309 ETH (87.1%), routed through its own MAVAN validator platform.

Whale Intel: Corporate ETH treasuries are boring in the best way. Buy, stake, hold, repeat.

🚩 RUG PULL HALL OF SHAME

CATFI: South Korea's First DEX Rug-Pull Prosecution

This week we cover a genuinely important recent case. South Korean prosecutors indicted five suspects behind CATFI, a Solana meme coin, in the country's first criminal prosecution of a DEX rug pull under the "Virtual Asset User Protection Act."

CATFI launched on Pump.fun in early 2025, ripped 1,001x in 26 hours, then died. 256 investors lost roughly 900M Korean won. Operators pocketed 400M won. Ringleader "Park" posed as an independent influencer on social media called "Eth Father" while running wash trades across group-controlled wallets.

Whale Intel: DeFi is no longer outside the reach of prosecutors. On-chain forensics is now piercing DEX anonymity in court.

🔍 CRYPTO CRIMINAL OF THE WEEK

Neil Chandran: The Ponzi Gets a 136-Month Sentence

Neil Suresh Chandran, 54, was sentenced this month to 136 months (over 11 years) for the ViRSE / CoinDeal scheme. From 2018 to 2022, he raised $45M+ from 10,000+ investors by claiming a consortium of billionaires was about to acquire his metaverse companies. There were no billionaires. Money went to luxury cars, real estate, and personal spending. Co-defendant Bryan Lee (ViMarket nominee owner) got 36 months.

Whale Intel: "Imminent billionaire buyer" is the second-oldest scam in finance after "sure thing." If the buyer is never named, they do not exist.

🎲 DEGENS ARE BETTING ON...

1. BTC Above $100,000 by Year-End: 8%

Polymarket on August 17 priced just an 8% chance that Bitcoin closes above $100K by December 31. With BTC parked near $63K, that is a 59% climb in about 19 weeks. The crowd sees the wall.

2. AI Bubble Bursts by Year-End: 14%

Same day, Polymarket bettors gave 14% odds that the "AI bubble" bursts before year-end. Nvidia earnings on August 26 sit right in the middle of that trade.

3. Fed Rate Hike Next Year: 80%

Kalshi bettors on August 14 put 80% odds on a Fed rate hike sometime in 2027. A sharp shift from earlier this summer, when the same market was pricing cuts.

⚡ QUICK HITS

  • Hive Digital signs a $350M GPU cloud agreement, adding nearly $70M to its annualized revenue.

  • Ripple minted another 10M RLUSD on August 17, pushing its regulated stablecoin supply to 1.71B tokens.

  • Trump-backed World Liberty gets preliminary conditional approval from OCC to establish a national trust bank.

  • Binance to restrict transactions with 11 crypto companies from August 23 for compliance review.

  • Hashdex’s $14.7M BTC ETF has officially closed and entered liquidation following its last trading day on August 17.

👁 WHAT TO WATCH NEXT WEEK

Today, White House hosts crypto CEOs. FOMC minutes drop at 2:00 pm ET. Tomorrow (Thursday, Aug 20): CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee kickoff. Jackson Hole runs Aug 27-29 with Chair Warsh's first address in the top slot. Watch whether BTC ETFs snap the outflow trend, and whether Nvidia's Aug 26 print moves those AI bubble odds on Polymarket.

Until next Wednesday, keep your keys safe and your leverage lower than your confidence. 🐳
